🌟 Literacy Learners – Session 4 Highlights

Read‑Aloud Book: How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague

Theme: School Routines • Respect • Self‑Control • Classroom Community Hands‑On Project: Mother’s Day Potted Flowers

Creative Expression: Storytelling + “Dear Mom” Letters

📘 What How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? Taught Our Learners

This read‑aloud was a perfect blend of humor and real‑life lessons. Through the silly dinosaur behaviors and the “right way” to act, learners explored:

  • School Readiness — understanding what it means to arrive prepared, calm, and ready to learn

  • Respect for Teachers & Friends — using kind words, listening, and taking turns

  • Self‑Control — choosing positive behaviors even when big feelings show up

  • Classroom Expectations — how to move safely, share materials, and follow routines

  • Being a Role Model — recognizing that their actions influence the whole classroom community

Learners loved comparing “dinosaur behavior” to “kid behavior,” and many shared examples from their own school day.

🌸 Mother’s Day Project: Potted Flowers

To celebrate the important women in their lives, each learner planted a personal potted flower to take home as a gift. This activity supported:

  • Responsibility — caring for a living plant

  • Fine‑Motor Skills — scooping soil, planting, watering

  • Emotional Expression — creating something meaningful for someone they love

The room was full of excitement as learners decorated their pots and talked about surprising their moms, grandmas, and aunties.

💛 Storytelling: “Three Things We Love About Our Mothers”

Learners took turns sharing stories about the women who care for them. This activity strengthened:

  • Public Speaking Confidence

  • Vocabulary & Sentence Building

  • Empathy & Appreciation

Some responses were sweet, some were funny, and all were heartfelt.

💌 Dear Mom Letters

Each learner wrote a short letter beginning with “Dear Mom…” and read it aloud to the group. This literacy activity supported:

  • Writing Fluency

  • Personal Voice

  • Reading with Expression

These letters were placed inside their Mother’s Day gift bags along with their potted flowers.

🎉 Session 4 Summary for the Website

Session 4 was our most energetic and heartfelt session yet! Learners explored school behaviors through a fun dinosaur story, created Mother’s Day gifts, practiced storytelling, and shared love through their Dear Mom letters. We welcomed two new students, bringing our group to 16 amazing learners.

UBGC™ is proud to continue building confident readers, writers, and speakers — one joyful session at a time.
