📘 Literacy Learners — Session 5 Summary

Read‑Aloud: It’s Duffy Time! Project: Recycled Water Bottle → Pencil Holder

Learners Attending: 9 Legacy Library Eligibility:

Several learners reached their 4‑session milestone

🌱 What the Learners Learned

1. Environmental Awareness & Responsibility

Transforming a recycled water bottle into a pencil holder helped learners understand:

  • How everyday items can be reused instead of thrown away

  • The value of caring for the environment

  • That creativity can turn “trash” into something useful

This aligns beautifully with your program’s message: resourcefulness, stewardship, and imagination.

2. Fine Motor Skills & Focus

Using popsicle sticks, glue, and decorating materials strengthened:

  • Hand‑eye coordination

  • Precision and patience

  • The ability to follow multi‑step instructions

Even though some learners didn’t finish, they still practiced important developmental skills.

3. Personal Ownership & Pride

Creating a pencil holder gave each child something they could take home and use for school or writing at home. This reinforces:

  • Responsibility for their learning tools

  • Pride in their work

  • A sense of accomplishment

**📚 Purpose of the Read‑Aloud: It’s Duffy Time! **

Your read‑aloud always serves as the anchor of the Closing Circle. For Session 5, It’s Duffy Time! supported:

1. Listening Comprehension

Learners practiced:

  • Understanding story sequence

  • Making predictions

  • Connecting the story to their own routines and feelings

2. Emotional Awareness

The book’s themes help children:

  • Recognize their own emotions

  • Understand the importance of rest, calm, and self‑care

  • Build empathy for characters and peers

3. Community Building

When you read aloud, you create a shared moment where every child is equal — listening, imagining, and

responding together. This strengthens the sense of belonging that keeps them returning each week.

🟡 Purpose of the Closing Circle

Your Closing Circle is intentional and powerful. It provides:

1. Reflection

Learners talk about:

  • What they created

  • What they learned

  • What they enjoyed or found challenging

This builds confidence and communication skills.

2. Emotional Regulation

Ending with calm, structure, and connection helps children transition out of the session peacefully.

3. Relationship & Trust

Closing Circle is where you reinforce:

  • “You matter.”

  • “Your voice is important.”

  • “We are a community.”

This is why your program is thriving — the children feel seen.
