🌊 Literacy Learners  —  Session: 1

 👧👦Learners: 6

Fourth of July Theme — Adjusted for Younger Learners

This week’s session was originally planned around Happy Birthday, America, but with our new group of younger learners, we made thoughtful adjustments to ensure the lesson was age‑appropriate, engaging, and fun. We kept the festive Fourth of July spirit while shifting the read‑aloud to a book better suited for early readers.

📘 Featured Book — Tumble and Bumble by Felicia Bond

Our read‑aloud centered on this playful, movement‑filled story that helped learners practice:

  • Story sequencing

  • Picture‑to‑text connections

  • Listening comprehension

  • Predicting what comes next

The book’s gentle rhythm and colorful characters kept our young learners fully engaged.

Despite the extreme heat — 104° outside — families were pleasantly surprised to find the library cool, comfortable, and fully air‑conditioned. Our 6 learners were energetic, focused, and excited to participate.

🎨 Hands‑On Project — Sparkle Firework Art

To honor the Fourth of July theme, learners created colorful fireworks using sparkle gel pens. This activity supported:

  • Fine motor development

  • Color recognition

  • Creative expression

  • Holiday‑themed fun without overwhelming younger learners

The sparkle pens were a huge hit — several learners asked to take extra sheets home.

🎒 Fourth of July Worksheet Bundle

Learners completed a mini worksheet pack that included:

  • Firework color‑and‑label sheet

  • Bubbles

  • Simple vocabulary cards (red, blue, star, celebrate)

  • 4th of July design Pen

  • A “My Firework” drawing prompt

  • A matching activity with holiday symbols

These worksheets were intentionally simplified to match the developmental level of our new group.

THANK YOU TO ALL LEARNERS AND PARENTS FOR MAKING THIS SESSION A SUCCESS.
