Despite a stormy day that kept some of our beloved learners away, the spirit inside our classroom was anything but grey. Session 6 of the Literacy Learners Spring Program was filled with laughter, creativity, heartfelt stories, and the kind of energy that reminds us exactly why this program exists.
We are thrilled to welcome 5 new learners to our growing community — including 2 parents who are taking a beautiful step forward for themselves and their families. Our enrollment has now reached 26 learners, and every single one of them makes this program extraordinary.

📖 THIS WEEK'S READ ALOUD
"What I Like About Me!"
by Allia Zobel Nolan, Illustrated by Miki Yamamoto
This joyful, rhyming celebration invites readers to discover what makes each of us wonderfully unique. From braces that dazzle to glasses that make us feel distinguished, the book teaches children and learners alike that our differences are our greatest gifts. In a delightful twist, the book even features a real mirror on its final page — inviting every reader to look at themselves with kindness and true appreciation.
In our literacy circle, this book sparked exactly the kind of magic it was designed to create. Learners of all backgrounds heard their own experiences reflected in its pages, and the room buzzed with recognition, laughter, and nods of agreement.
🌟 Benefits of This Read Aloud:
• Builds Self-Esteem — Reinforces that every person's unique qualities are something to celebrate.
• Celebrates Diversity — Opens conversations about differences in culture, appearance, and background.
• Sparks Oral Language — The rhyming text naturally invites learners to chime in and engage vocally.
• Connects to Identity — Encourages learners to reflect on who they are and what they love about themselves.

🪞 OUR HANDS-ON PROJECT: Creating a Mirror
What better way to bring "What I Like About Me!" to life than by creating a mirror of your own? Each learner was given the outline of a mirror frame and invited to begin designing it in a way that is entirely, beautifully theirs.
"Each learner took a turn sharing a story — describing what their mirror frame would look like, the shapes, the colours, the symbols, and the memories woven into its design. These weren't just decorations. They were windows into each person's world."
The room fell into a gentle rhythm as voices rose and fell, each story more beautiful than the last. Parents shared designs inspired by their children. Long-time learners drew from years of experience. New learners found their voice for the very first time in our circle.
🎨 Benefits of the Mirror Project:
• Oral Storytelling — Builds descriptive language, vocabulary, and confidence to speak in a group.
• Creative Expression — Art-making deepens memory and emotional engagement with learning.
• Self-Reflection & Identity — Mirror-based projects help participants connect with their sense of self.
• Community & Belonging — Sharing personal stories creates bonds of trust and mutual respect.
